How to set a wallpaper slideshow on Windows 11

Windows 11 can show one wallpaper or rotate a whole folder. Here is how to do both, plus multiple monitors.

Set a single wallpaper

  1. Right-click the image in File Explorer and choose “Set as desktop background”.
  2. Or open Settings → Personalization → Background, choose Picture and browse to the file.
  3. Under “Choose a fit for your desktop image”, pick Fill.

Rotate a folder as a slideshow

  1. If your wallpapers came as a zip, right-click it and choose Extract All.
  2. Open Settings → Personalization → Background and set “Personalize your background” to Slideshow.
  3. Click Browse and pick the folder.
  4. Choose how often to change the picture and turn on Shuffle if you like.

Different wallpapers on multiple monitors

In Settings → Personalization → Background, choose Picture, then right-click a recent image and pick which monitor to set it for. A slideshow rotates across all monitors.

Choosing a fit

Fill covers the screen and trims a little from the edges if the shapes differ — the best choice for most images. Fit shows the whole image with bars. Stretch distorts the image, so avoid it. A wallpaper at least as large as your monitor’s resolution stays sharp; 3840 × 2400 covers 4K monitors and smaller.

Questions

Quick answers

Why is the slideshow option greyed out?

Slideshow needs a folder that contains images. Make sure the zip is extracted first.

How do I go back to a single picture?

In Settings → Personalization → Background, set “Personalize your background” back to Picture and choose an image.
